Jan. 15

Happy New Year! It has been great being back in class for in-school learning this week. I must say I was impressed with how successful our first week of online learning went. Students were ready for our video meetings and were very respectful and patient while participating. I appreciate all of the support and planning parents and caregivers gave; this contributed to our amazing week.

This weeks learning:

Math: Multiplication: Students continue to practice various multiplication strategies. We are learning how to multiply using repeated addition, grouping, arrays, skip counting, number lines and multiplication sentences. Students have learned through Mad Minutes, Multiplication Squares, and working on strategies.

3-Dimensional Shapes: We took advantage of the nice weather and spent some time outside working as partners creating 3-D shapes out of snow. We learned some shapes are harder to make out of snow, and that team work is a determining factor of success. Students tried making snowman out of their snow shapes.

Language Arts: Word Work: We have been looking at "r" controlled vowels. This weeks focus was "ir" words. Ask your child what the difference is for the pronunciation of the "i" for the words  "dirt" and "drit."

Writing: We have been practicing writing expository and persuasive paragraphs using a "hamburger model" graphic organizer. Students have been fixing my "boring sentences" by writing compound and complex sentences that contain supporting details. We also introduced a good beginnings. We discussed the good controversy of using a bold statement.

Books we read this week: We started a novel study on "Charlottes Web," by E.B. White, "I Promise," by Lebron James, "Ish," by Peter Reynolds

Science: We brought out our class rock collections and described, sketched and compared different types of rocks.

Social Studies: Students were introduced to the quality of life in Peru. We compared it to our quality of life in Canada.

Health: Goal Setting: What is New Years without resolutions. Students shared two things they are good at and one thing they would like to get better at. Next week we will make a plan for how to achieve our goals. We also read Labron James' new book "I Promise."

Mindfulness: we tried mindful tapping this week. We think it is a great tool. Try it out yourself: Mindful tapping

Art: Students completed an art critique on a painting called Calgary Landscape. This art critique included: What do you see? How does it make you feel? What do you like or dislike? What could the artist improve or could have done better?
