Learning from This Week
Math: Introduction to subtraction. Concepts and language to help identify when subtraction is being used in a problem. Reviewing basic fact families. Recognizing and discussing connections and similarities of subtraction and addition.
Language Arts: Writing story beginnings. Recognizing good beginnings in model texts. Discussing the importance of the HOOK! Practice using Action, Sound, Thoughts/Questions, and Dialogue to start a story. Students chose their favourite beginning in order to write a short story on our Macbooks. They will be reviewing and editing these stories using a Google From checklist. We have also tied in our Science unit on Sound and Hearing and have explored onomatopoeias. Students created posters showing how sounds can be used within illustrations and to enhance text.
Battle Of The Books: We are beginning to face one book against another in Battle of the Books. Students will read and compare two stories and vote to see which book will face another challenger and which book will be defeated. This week "Chicken Little" will face off agains "Goldilocks And the Three Bears." We will vote based on which story we like the most to determine which book will be this weeks champion.
Science: Experimented to observe whether we could see sound. Turns out, in a way you can! Ask your child how they came to this conclusion. As we explore sound we are in the middle of exploring the big question how do humans and sounds interact with one another? Students observed how location influences sound around our school property. They have also shared and compared the positive and negative affects of sounds and posted their ideas regarding what they think are pleasant sounds and unpleasant sounds around our classroom.
